Erectile Dysfunction: Better Food or Medication?

By: Sajjad Ahmad

Now its time to make a decision whether to use medication of ED or you need some diet change. First of

all we need to know the physical and psychological causes of erectile dysfunction. Reduced blood flows

to the penis and nerve damage are two of the major physical causes. Others include vascular disease,

diabetes, drugs, hormone disorders, neurological disorders, pelvic trauma, surgery, radiation therapy, a

venous leak or psychological conditions.

Zinc Deficiencies:
Zinc is vital to many internal processes and supports immune function, reproduction, and the nervous

system. A lack of zinc can interfere with the maturation of the reproductive organs, as well as

interfere with reproductive functions and processes. It can contribute to impotence. Chronic diarrhea,
poor appetite, and thus significant weight loss of the unhealthy and undesirable sort, hair loss, and

the slow healing of wounds are all associated with zinc deficiencies. So be sure to include lots of

zinc-rich foods in your diet, including red meat, fortified cereals, oysters, almonds, peanuts,

chickpeas, soy foods, and dairy products.

What else to eat:
It’s also imperative to include other vitamins and minerals in your diet, as they may also help improve

erectile dysfunction. Be sure to eat whole, fresh, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Include fruits

(lots of richly pigmented berries to support vascular integrity), vegetables, whole grains, soy, beans,

seeds, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, and mackerel. Also be sure

to drink plenty of water. A good rule of thumb is to drink 50% of your body weight in ounces of water

daily (e.g., if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of water daily). Try to avoid alcohol and smoking, as

they can have a negative impact on erectile function.

What to avoid:
Avoid sugar, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, and caffeine. If you’ve found in

the past that you’re sensitive to certain kinds of foods, eliminate them from your diet, as it could be

a contributing factor to erectile dysfunction. To increase sperm quantity Experts suggest that men, who

are hoping to father children in the near future, must make it a point to eat a balanced diet that

ideally comprises of lots of fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants present in leafy greens, peppers,

tomatoes, and oranges -such as
cryptoxanthin and glutathione- play a major role in enhancing the sperm count and movement, while Brazil

nuts have Selenium in plenty, another sperm booster.

Another mineral that contributes towards healthy sperm count is Zinc (as mentioned above), which is

present in large amounts in wholegrain cereals, seafood, meat, eggs and pulses. Meat and seafood are

also a rich source of Selenium. Sperm count will be affected by activities such as smoking and alcohol

abuse, and also prolonged soaks in hot water tub. All of this could kill sperm.

Few words on Medication:
The pharmaceutical manufacturers have a responsibility to publicize caution on indiscretionary or

indiscriminate use of ED drugs available and their-long and extra-medical use must be discouraged. An

Indian version of the world famous formulation Viagra containing Tadafil (Which is too expensive to take

regularly) is Kamagra. With the introduction of Viagra formulations like Kamagra and yet another one

called Levitra have tried to take a small bite of the huge market.

The ED treatment is one market which is growing with more and more patients approaching their physicians

to treat their sexual disorders but there is an overwhelming demand to take Viagra just for fun.

Medications have some or the other side-effects. Their acceptability is linked to their being sans

long-term side-effects or short-term serious side-effects. The bottom line is that most of the drugs are

supposed to be temporary interventions and so is Viagra and cannot be all-time substitutes for a good

health.
